For the Canadian material girl, a gift box from Tiffany, Hermès or Holt Renfrew will make her say aah(s).
MONEY WELL SPENT | If you are hunting for a graduation gift for someone who loves to dress up (and sparkle), and you are prepared to spend some money but don’t want to go too, too crazy, consider picking up a little something from Tiffany & Co., Hermès or Holt Renfrew.
Each of these luxury goods retailers, who package their merchandise in gift boxes as recognizable as their names, sells small, and not exorbitantly expensive, jewellery items and accessories that are already ordained classics. These are pieces that get passed along to daughters and beyond, items destined to pop up in fashion magazines 50 years from now (online, of course, because paper mags will have vanished) on their hot vintage collectibles lists—things with the potential to hold or accrue value.
What’s hot out of The Box right now?
In The Blue Box
One of the things we love about Tiffany & Co. is that they typically have plenty of stock, making it easy for the buyer who wants something specific, quickly.
What a material girl wants right now is a classic silver Tiffany charm bracelet ($270) with Return to Tiffany& Co. engraved on it. If she has the bracelet, get her additional charms ($90 to $250). If she has both, try a Tiffany key necklace (keys range from $210 to $300; chains start at $60). See the bracelet here. Contact Tiffany & Co. at 604-630-1300.

The Hapi 3 leather bracelet is a definite collector’s item. It comes in two styles, one that makes a single turn around the wrist and another that wraps around multiple times. Both come in three sizes and a wide range of colours and have the classic H for Hermès buckle, which fastens like a belt. The Hapi 3 ranges from $275 to $295.
The saddest thing about the Hapi is that if you are too specific about colour and size, you may have trouble finding one in Canada (or anywhere) if you need it quickly. The bracelets are made in workshops, not factories, so they don’t roll off assembly lines. If you can’t find one by grad, order it for an upcoming occasion. See the bracelet here. Contact Hermès at 604-681-9965.

For what to put in a Holt Renfrew box, the possibilities are endless. Holts represents dozens of luxury brands, many with iconic fashion items in their lines. But for this year’s fashion conscious grads who don’t have one, the now nine-year-old stratospherically iconic, instantly recognizable Alexander McQueen silk chiffon skull scarf is a must-have. It sells for $350.
Because of this item’s popularity, there are no inter-store transfers, but if you can’t find it in Vancouver, purchase it directly from another Holts and have it sent to you. If that fails, all the U.S. Alexander McQueen stores, where the scarf sells for $260, have stock, and if you know someone living in/or going to New York, Las Vegas or L.A., ask them to pick up one and mail it to you (store shipping adds $100 to the price). An Alexander McQueen gift box isn’t shabby by a long shot. See the scarf here. Contact Holt Renfrew at 604-681-3121.
