Use Outdoor Plants For Indoor Arrangements
Some outdoor plants look spectacular potted up for the house before they’re turned loose in the garden.
THE CREATIVE SOLUTION | Cut flowers straight from the garden or the corner store are a fine if conventional way to bring spring indoors. But bedding plants, which are becoming more plentiful everywhere as the gardening season takes hold, make equally attractive, arguably more novel and definitely cost-effective arrangements.
Popped temporarily into a container before bedding out, garden plants, such as the miniature roses pictured at the top of this story, offer nature lovers a way to experience things up close they may never examine seriously once they are growing outside.
For maximum impact in the pot, I go for plants with pronounced architectural lines, like the Agapanthus “Streamline” pictured directly above, which I first potted up for the dining room table and then later transferred to my community garden plot. Also attractive are plants that come in well-defined clumps, such as Sempervivum, or plants that have a pincushion look with blooms that pop up—Armeria caespitosa is one of these.
To keep bedding plants in good condition and smelling sweet in a non-draining pot, put a bit of charcoal in the bottom before you add the soil and the plant. And it goes without saying, of course, that any plant you choose should be in bloom when you display it.
