No-Screw Shelving By Peter Cardew
Kick out the Billy (IKEA lovers will understand)! Replace it with no-screw shelving designed by Peter Cardew—on sale right now at 18 Karat. (VIDEO)
FURNITURE WE LOVE | To our list of favourite contemporary home furnishings designers/manufacturers (who just happen to come from western Canada)—Niels Bendsten; Omer Arbel; Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen of Molo—we would like to add the name Peter Cardew. A man better known both here and abroad for award-winning architecture, Cardew has, in recent years, turned his talent to designing furniture for 18 Karat (now back in business after an hiatus), and this collaboration has resulted in some fine furniture pieces, particularly in wood.
Although Cardew’s furniture is not stratospherically expensive, neither is it cheap, which is why we love it when pieces go on sale periodically. (Call the store to check.)
Shelf Life
Named for its perfect symmetry, SYM shelving is composed of a ladder-like frame made of solid-core stainless steel rods and shelves of solid European oak, which have been hand sanded and oiled. Watch the video above to see how easily these pieces fit together with the help of a rubber mallet. Making a SYM bookcase is way easier than putting together the classic IKEA Billy—and it will last a lot longer (no doubt your entire lifetime) too. —Ruth Rainey
