MONEY WELL SPENT | Is Canada a nation of flosser wannabes? You would think so if you glanced at the December 31 Huffington Post “picture gallery” piece that ran under the bold headline “New Year’s Resolutions 2012: The Top Resolutions For Canadians.”

The HuffPo article referenced stats gathered last November when Virgin Mobile asked its customers about New Year’s resolutions. Flossing came in as one of the wackiest resolutions for 2012. Although it wasn’t one of the most common ones, according to Virgin Mobile spokesperson Erica Faltous, the HuffPo singled it out nonetheless. Maybe the HuffPo editors are gaga about flossing the way Lululemon execs are (CLICK HERE for the company manifesto), or the way we are at Frugalbits, where one of our editors now waxes evangelical on the subject because of a discovery she made.

Flossing: The Yada, Yada

Flossing is an important weapon against plaque buildup on your teeth, perhaps more important than the toothbrush. A toothbrush cleans the tops and sides of your teeth. Dental floss cleans between them. If you only brush your teeth and never floss them, you are not cleaning one third of the tooth surface in your mouth.

Our New Favourite Floss

At $4.99 for a box of 50 precut strands (at London Drugs), Oral-B Super Floss is not the cheapest flossing product on the market, but whatever keeps you flossing will save you money at the dentist down the line. What makes Super Floss particularly effective is that it’s a three-in-one product with a stiffened-end dental floss threader (for tight areas), spongy floss (for wide gaps) and regular floss (for everything else). And because it comes in premeasured strands, you never have to think about whether you’re pulling too much or too little off your roll of floss. —Olivia Pittman

OB Superfloss is a wonderful product however it is designed for people who have either bridges or braces. The large foamy part is designed to clean debris out of the “larger” areas that floss doesn’t work on as it is too thin. The other product for these larger areas is an interdental cleaner that will brush away plaque and bacterial from the in between areas of the teeth. It looks like a little bottle brush but is just the right size to fit into those spaces that collect food particles. The downfall of SuperFloss is it sometimes leaves particles of fibre behind which can create problems of their own. Also, the stiffened end becomes “un stiff” very quickly and becomes floppy and useless. Perhaps Viagra with it would make it more effective.

I don’t necessarily agree with Liz. I think if done properly and as directed by your dentist you can achieve the results described above and have the super floss work for you well. I would suggest this over no flossing any time.
