Truck & Moo With MOV’s Culture Crew

Where to bike, truck, cheep and moo—from the Museum of Vancouver’s innovative culture crew.

The Museum Of Vancouver Administrative TeamThe most vibrant and exciting cultural institution in our city right now is one that’s old as the hills: the Museum of Vancouver, a.k.a. MOV, which has been around since 1894. Over the past few years, the team pictured here has transformed MOV into a local light by celebrating what is original about our town, with exhibitions covering everything from our very own rock stars of footwear to barbecue duels fought local Iron Chef style. This year, MOV’s innovation led to a Canadian Museums Association award for  “Re-Envisioning.”

Nancy Noble, CEO (pictured right), is a longtime museum professional and the driving force behind the recent changes at MOV. Joan Seidl, Director of Collections and Exhibitions (pictured left), has worked in museums since she was 14 years old and has curated dozens of exhibits. Amanda Gibbs, Director of Audience Engagement (pictured in the middle), is a specialist in branding, community engagement and new forms of storytelling.

Nancy, Amanda and Joan’s 5 free, cheap or worth it things to see, do or buy in Vancouver (and beyond).

BIKE the seawall. Science World to Vanier Park offers one of the sexiest bike rides in North America. Head east from Granville Island and take in postcard-like views of Yaletown. When you’re through reclining on the giant white loungers at Southeast False Creek, push ahead along the Adanac bike path to Strathcona’s Union Market, a beloved local haunt. Must-try treats include Portuguese cod cakes and chocolate macaroons. A treat with coffee will run you about $5.

CHEEP OUT at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. Widely considered one of the most significant bird watching sites in Canada, the Reifel Bird Sanctuary on the Fraser River is also one of the Lower Mainland’s cheapest daytrips. It’s a paltry $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children 2-14. Kilometres of trails through wetlands reveal multitudes of fowl. Even for nonbirders, the views are worth the trip. If you ask, they might even let you view their taxidermy collection. www.reifelbirdsanctuary.com

TRUCK ON OVER to John Fluevog’s store. For total immersion in one of the fanciful interiors that made the brand famous, go to the original store at 837 Granville Street. Or visit Fluevog’s new flagship Gastown store at 65 Water Street for the ultimate in contemporary warehouse cool. It costs nothing to try on shoes, unless, of course, you fall in love. www.fluevog.com

TAKE A HIKE along the dike just north of Steveston. Check out the Steveses’ delightful black and white Belted Galloway cattle, a rare breed in North America. Harold and Kathy continue to work their 145-year-old farm, even as the suburbs have grown up around them. www.stevesfarm.com

TALK & TOUR MOV the first Thursday of the month. For the regular admission of $12, you’ll not only be able to explore all of our exhibits but also attend the 7 p.m. Curator’s Talk & Tour for an in-depth look at our current feature exhibit.  www.museumofvancouver.ca
