NEW IN CANADA | Film lovers who think the movie selection on Netflix sucks and the content from on-demand providers like iTunes, Shaw and Blockbuster skews way too whitebread American are going to love that Mubi is now “officially” available in Canada.
Mubi (it’s a made-up word, like Frugalbits) is a web-based destination that streams independent, foreign and classic films, most of which are not currently available in DVD.
Referred to as an online cinematheque, Mubi, which launched in 2008 and is partnered with The Criterion Collection and other art house distributors, differentiates itself from Netflix by providing one new movie every day that is available for viewing for 30 days straight (Mubi will send you blurb every time a new movie is posted). This month Mubi Canada will stream full-length feature films from Denmark, Canada, France, the U.S., Germany, Mexico, Philippines and South Korea.

There are three ways to watch Mubi movies on your flat screen TV. You can hook up your TV to your computer (Apple users will need a special adaptor); you can go through a Boxee Box (CLICK HERE for our story); you can connect to Mubi through any Sony Internet-enabled device (CLICK HERE to learn how easy it is to do it).
Right now there are two ways to try Mubi for free. Anyone can sign up for a seven-day free trial (CLICK HERE to find out how). Anyone with a Sony Internet-enabled product may be eligible for a free 30-day trial (CLICK HERE for the details). In Canada, Mubi’s monthly subscription rate is $4.99. If you sign up for a year, that amount is reduced to just $2.99 (you will need to do a bit of clicking on their site to find this price), or about the price of a grande Americano at Starbucks. —Annabel Lee
