Taking Your Eyelashes To Great Lengths

Here’s a take on Latisse, the topical treatment that temporarily lengthens, thickens and darkens eyelashes, that you may not have read before.

Woman eye with extremely long eyelashes and golden makeupBEAUTY SMART | Recently I ran into Christina Tanti, the great friend of a friend of mine, someone I hadn’t seen for several months, and the first thing I noticed about her were her knockout eyelashes. Admittedly I’ve been on eyelash jag of late, what with the ongoing buzz about eyelash enhancement that includes everything from extensions and growth products to Katy Perry–style falsies. “I never noticed your eyelashes before; they look gorgeous,” I cooed.

“That’s because I didn’t have many before,” Tanti replied, uttering the magic word you hear everywhere in beauty circles these days: “Latisse.”

Tanti started using Latisse last September after purchasing a bottle without a prescription at a medical spa in San Francisco for $120. She applied it religiously every night for two weeks and saw “huge” improvement in the length, fullness and colour of her lashes. “It was like I washed my face and went to bed one night and woke up the next morning looking like I had on mascara—but I didn’t,” she says. “I never go out without mascara.”

What makes this story different from a lot of those you read about Latisse is that Tanti stopped using the product every night after that initial two weeks (the manufacturer estimates it takes 16 weeks for lashes to reach their maximum growth) and switched to maintenance mode, applying it every three nights. Worried about being able to get it in Canada, (Latisse became available locally in November), Tanti says she wanted her bottle to last. “My lashes were already double what they had been, and I was fine with that.”

Now it’s January, and Tanti has a little less than one-third of her original bottle left, thanks in part to careful application. Latisse comes with a supply of applicator brushes that are thicker than they need to be, she says. Her friend in San Fran showed her how to trim each one so that it picks up no more liquid than necessary. “This really cuts down on waste.”

Where to buy Latisse in Vancouver

While you can find Latisse for as little as $99 a bottle in the U.S., the average price appears to be around $120. In Vancouver, the average price for a bottle of Latisse appears to be around $150—plus taxes, of course. And while the product isn’t cheap, you do use less as time goes by. It is definitely an alternative to eyelash extensions, which are pricey, and it will probably save you money on mascara.

We found Latisse at three local clinics: Carruthers.net, Vancouver Laser & Skin Care Centre and Lonsdale Skin + Laser. Carruthers charges $150 for a consultation and $150 per bottle of Latisse, with a two-bottle minimum to start. Neither Vancouver Laser & Skin Care Centre nor Lonsdale Skin + Laser charges a consultation fee, and both sell Latisse for $150 per bottle, and you can start with just one.  —C. Rule

      Hi,
If you live in Vancouver, you might want to check at any of the places mentioned in the article (prices listed, too); if you don’t check, realself.com. I think they can put you in touch with someone who sells it near you. Good luck.

I Googled and found it at Skin Matters in Vancouver cheaper. I paid $35 for a consult with the nurse as well as the doctor. It was only $200 for two month supply but you have to be a patient of this clinic or become a patient at the clinic. Apparently existing patients can have the consult fee waived. I was curious why the price was so different, they told me that their clinic usually do not mark up prescription medications. This was also the first clinic I have been to where there was no feeling of a sales pitch. In fact, when I asked about the tip of the “maintenance mode”, I was told that 2 to 3 times a week should work after the initial 4 months of daily application. I love Canadian doctors! …or at least this one.

    Hi Ladies,
Skinworks has it for $150 a bottle, $275 for two, and 545 for four. Dr. Frances Jang. You have to be a patient, and consults are $150. But she’s wonderful, and once you’re a patient, you don’t have to consult every time.

    She’s at 41st and Dunbar.

I got a one month bottle for $150 from Dr Fleming at Lougheed Laser Centre in Burnaby. I’m not sure about the fee because I was seeing her for laser treatment at the time.
