A Very Good Reason To Buy Unshelled Nuts

Notoriously addictive nuts are one superfood that should be consumed daily. Here’s how to avoid over indulging.

Walnuts-In-The-Shell-iStock-300x300EATING RIGHT | Jeffrey Steingarten, a leading food writer in the U.S., once compared ingesting a single pecan to swallowing a pat of butter. That didn’t stop the sometime judge on Iron Chef America from indulging in pecans, but this fact stopped me cold when I read it in Vogue—and it put me off pecans forever. After all who would knowingly shove multiple slabs of pure butterfat into their mouth?

Studies in recent years have confirmed that everyone who can eat nuts should do so every day. While it’s true nuts are high in fat, it’s the saturated kind that’s been demonstrated to lower the LDL cholesterol that can build up in blood vessels and lead to heart disease. Once regarded as “high-fat nutritional villains to be avoided at all costs, nuts are now touted as a health food,” according to THIS HELPFUL ARTICLE in the Washington Post.

How To Crack Down On Consumption

A big problem with nut consumption is how to keep your daily intake to the recommended handful. Nuts are relatively high in calories and notoriously addictive, but there is an easy way to avoid consuming too many—and gaining extra, unwanted weight: eat only nuts you’ve shelled yourself.

Cracking nuts takes some doing, and once you’ve cracked a handful, you’re going to want a break.

Fall Is The Nutty Season

Nuts in the shell aren’t always easy to find, particularly if you want something other than pistachios or almonds, which are available at grocery stores such as Safeway and Whole Foods. In the fall, though, most food markets large and small carry a wider variety of nuts. I’ve found beautiful unshelled walnuts IGA, Bosa Foods and at Iranian supers such as Mitra Bulk Food & Deli in West Vancouver. Safeway has two-pound bags of mixed nuts—walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts and pecans—for just $9.99, and a one-pound bag of unshelled walnuts for $5.99. Time to get cracking! —Annabel Lee
