Clever Ways To Use Ordinary Flower Pots

Here’s how to create instant impact in the garden by using the same ordinary element over and over again.

CHEAP & CHIC | It takes a certain kind of fearlessness to believe that you can make a cliché look fresh. The cliché I’m referring to here is the wide-rimmed dime-a-dozen terracotta pot found in every nursery and hardware store from there to China. You know the (inexpensive) kind I’m talking about, pictured here empty. If you’re like me, you cannot wait to replace yours with their more curvaceous Italian cousins, or some skinny Long Toms from England, or something stunning in Asian stoneware.

Potted With Pride

Not artist and garden designer Lance Hattat. At Arrow Cottage, his garden in Herefordshire, England, he has awarded the humble, clay foot soldier a higher rank. Hattat’s amazing garden consists of a series of themed rooms in the spirit of Hidcote and Sissinghurst. Only when you begin to move around the grounds do you discover the layers of ornamentation, the most prominent ornament being those pedestrian clay pots. Hattat introduces the pots appropriately enough in the nursery that you must walk through to enter the garden, and you say to yourself the first time you see them, “Now that’s cool.” Because most nurseries display their plants in plastic containers.

Of course you don’t expect to run into them again, but you do, almost immediately, in one of the first rooms you enter, where more than a dozen of them, each the same size (30 centimetres in diameter) and filled with the same clipped boxwood, skirt the edge of a circular patio. And so it goes throughout the garden. Just when you think you may have seen the last of them, they reappear in multiples planted up with a new material and set out in a different configuration.

FOUR TIPS FOR REPEATING YOURSELF

Lance Hattat makes the ordinary clay pot look arty by employing four constants that ensure maximum visual impact:
1. Always use the same style pot
2. Always make it the same size
3. Always show it planted with a single, similar material
4. Always display plant varieties and pots in multiples
