Bed Making 101: Fold “Hotel Corners” Right

Contemporary bed making requires a skill practiced by the military and hospital and hotel staff. Here’s how to do it right the right way.

DO IT RIGHT | The wedding cake bed—you know, the ultrafeminine one (pictured here) with a frothy meringue of duvet, pleated bed skirt and rows of European shams racked up against the headboard—may not be passé, but it is not what’s currently hot in bedding. What’s in fashion in bedding right now is a tailored, masculine effect, characterized by lean, clean lines and multiple layers of fitted sheets and flat covers drawn in tight to the bed frame.

This new “man bed” (the one above is from Design Within Reach) is a simpler and more sophisticated look than the “girly bed” at the top of this story, but creating it does require a skill that, unless you grew up in a military, medical or hotel family, might be missing from your housekeeping repertoire: mastery of the 45 or 90 degree corner.

Here’s how to turn THIS corner when you come to it.

Enlisting The Military

Hospital Corner- Art of ManlinessI love THIS POST (CLICK HERE) on the Art Of Manliness website that explains in graphic detail how to make the 45-degree turn on a bed. If you can’t get it the hang of it from perusing the illos, WATCH THIS video instead.

Do Tell Hotel

“Hotel Corners,” like the 90-degree kind shown on the bed above from Design Within Reach, are a variation on the military/hospital 45-degree corner cut. IN THIS VIDEO, Elubia, head of housekeeping at  the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, Virginia, demonstrates how to turn a tight corner when employing a fluffy duvet. If you can’t get the hang of it, this Kimpton hotel offers free bed making lessons to guests. —C. Rule

Good question. Not every one of our stories has to do with saving money. Yes, this kind of bed making definitely takes more time than throwing on a duvet, but it happens to be the trend—what’s in fashion right now—and we were reporting on that. Our goal was to figure our how to get this corner turned properly in the least amount of time with the least amount of frustration, that’s all.—eds

  • I remember this lesson during our health care 1 as part of the hospital bed making. Same as what in hotel beds, it has a detailed mitering on the corner. I find it really interesting, and something you can apply in your daily routine :)
