MONEY WELL SPENT | You could give your sweet mama any number of indulgences for Mother’s Day (It’s May 13 in case you need a reminder), a box of heavenly macaroons, for example, or her favourite expensive perfume, but these sorts of gifts are ephemeral. If you really want to go all out for the woman who grew you up, give her a gift that will do right by her beautiful mind.
She Needs To Put Some Weight On
Resistance (weight) training, as we learned this past week when a just-published six-month University of B.C. study involving elderly women and exercise was plastered all over the media (CLICK HERE to read the Vancouver Sun version), proved more effective in improving memory in women aged 70 to 80 with mild cognition problems than did aerobic exercise (walking) and balance, tone and stretch classes.
To benefit fully from a weight training workout and to avoid injury, you need to have an understanding of proper technique, and the most effective way to learn it is in the company of a personal trainer. Yes, personal training is expensive ($60 to $80 an hour around Metro Vancouver), but giving you mother three sessions ($180 to $240) with a weight lifting pro will get her started the right way, plus leave her with a plan for moving forward because, as the UBC study suggests, continually increasing weight resistance benefits “multiple domains [in the brain] in those at risk of dementia.” —Ruth Rainey
