How To Stress Less: A Free Lecture, Yesss!

WHAT THE PROS KNOW | One thing most of us know for sure is that change is a condition of existence. We know, too, that the big changes in our lives, the ones that affect our health, our heart life (relationships) and home life (moved lately?) inevitably cause stress. Experiencing some anxiousness around change is not a bad thing, says registered clinical counsellor Deborah Braun. “Anxiety in itself is not the problem—worry can be a great motivator; it’s how we look at life and anxiety that usually trips us up.”

“Most people see anxiety as a fault, something they want to diminish. Many us have learned to disregard our uncomfortable emotions because we’re afraid we’ll lose control or that they may leak out at unwanted times.” Braun says many of us use anxiety as a way to criticize ourselves when we could actually use it as an opportunity to “tune in to our emotions and educate ourselves.”

Braun’s free lecture, which will take place tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the West Vancouver Community Centre, can help those prone to serious anxiety or anyone interested in improving their ability to deal with life’s unexpected curve balls. Among other topics, Braun will focus on how to manage natural worries, challenge anxious thoughts and reduce unwarranted fears. —C. Rule
